A recent visit to the Fillmore area in San Francisco had me thinking about the interface between the economy and community. While defined shopping districts are common in cities, they are less common in smaller towns. These are the new community “living rooms,” providing places for people to gather, fostering a sense of connectedness and belonging. Benicia is fortunate to have a defined shopping district, and one that is also rich in history.
